The Solution For Stinky Breath

Posted on: 18 February 2015

It can be embarrassing and isolating to have bad breath. If your bad breath is a permanent issue and not just a temporary side effect of your lunchtime garlic meals, it's time to start figuring out how to get rid of the stinky breath.

If you feel that you, or a loved one, have issues with bad breath there are some causes and solutions which can help you.

Dental hygiene

Where small amounts of food and drinks are left behind in the mouth, these become a breeding ground for bacteria and a bad smell can result. This can be a particularly issue for smokers who are extra prone to bacteria and odour buildup in the mouth.

Solution; Regular teeth brushing and flossing can remove most food remenants. While most people need to brush twice a day, you may find that brushing after your lunch is a good interim measure while you are getting your tooth decay under control. Make sure to brush vigorously and cover all sections on the mouth and set an alarm to make sure you are brushing and flossing for long enough.

Extra credit; Try brushing and flossing with electric brushers and flossers. These brushes remove more plaque at bacteria at the gum line which can be useful if you have high or receded gumlines.

Dry mouth/medications

Some medications can give you a side effect of bad breath, largely due to "dry mouth" where you do not have as much saliva flowing through the mouth and there is more chance for bacteria to grow and buildup.

Solution; Make a point of having small sips of water throughout the day, and chewing gum to stimulate saliva production.

Extra credit; ask your pharmacist for a 'dry mouth' mouthwash and/or gum. These items are specifically designed for people with dry mouth and help stimulate saliva production.

Tooth Decay/Gum Disease

Unfortunately, once gum disease and tooth decay can commenced you will need to head into the dentist to determine the extent of your decay issues and what can be done to get your mouth into a healthy state again.

Solution; visit your dentist for remedial work

Extra credit; book regular check ups, scale and cleans to catch other issues early on and remove more of the odour generating nasties.

Bad breath can be a early symptom of a lack of balance and health in your mouth, so do not ignore it. Working with a dentist in your area can help you fix the issue and get your breath smelling sweet again.
