Teeth Whitening Treatment Solutions Offered by Dentists

Posted on: 18 June 2020

Dentists help people take good care of their teeth and keep dental diseases at bay, but they can also perform certain dental procedures to revamp people's smiles. One of the most common cosmetic dental services that dentists provide is teeth whitening. As the name says, this type of cosmetic dental treatment is carried out to make stained or discoloured teeth shine again.

Here are a few ways a dentist can help you achieve a brighter smile.

In-Office Whitening

The procedure usually involves a dentist applying hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth and then aiming a special light at them to apply heat. Some dentists use a laser, with the aim of speeding up the whitening process. The gel is removed and re-applied multiple times at different intervals until the desired shade of white has been achieved.

To protect the gums, tongue, and lips from the whitening gel, the dentist will insert a dental retractor in your mouth. This will help pull the cheeks and lips away from the teeth, allowing for easy application of the whitening gel. Generally, these come in plastic or rubber material to ensure they feel as comfortable as possible when worn.

In-office teeth whitening tends to be the most expensive whitening option, but it is money well-spent because the results also last the longest.

For optimal results, your teeth will be professionally cleaned first to remove plaque that has turned into tartar. The entire procedure from dental cleaning to whitening can be completed in a single visit to the dentist's office.

Whitening With Dentist-Fitted Custom Trays

This is an alternative to sitting in the dental chair for a couple of hours to get your teeth whitened, but you may have to make at least two visits to the dental clinic. During the first visit, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and use them to create custom whitening trays for you.

Once the trays are ready, you'll have to return to the dentist to have them fitted into your mouth. The trays contain hydrogen peroxide gel, which helps whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening with custom trays takes longer than in-office whitening because you'll be required to wear your trays a few hours daily over a couple of weeks.

Arranging an initial consultation with your dentist is a good starting point if you need to get your teeth whitened. They will examine your teeth and recommend the best treatment available to you.
