How Do You Know When You Need Dental Help Fast?

Posted on: 10 December 2020

Like any other unexpected event, a dental emergency can occur at any time of the day or night. You could be playing around the house with your loved ones and fall forcefully, hurting your teeth. You could also be feasting on your favourite meal before biting on a tough bone and start feeling uncomfortable in an instant. In short, you need to know when you need a dental emergency service. The service could be a treatment, therapy, or thorough examination to reassure you that everything is well. How can you tell when you need emergency dental services? Read on to learn more about instances where you should not hesitate to seek immediate help:

Severe Pain and Bleeding

Your teeth are naturally designed to withstand tough conditions and brute force. However, when things get out of hand, the robust outer layers will give in and expose the delicate inner tissues. The result is severe pain and discomfort, often accompanied by bleeding in cases where your teeth encountered a brute force. Severe, persistent pain indicates that you are suffering from a serious problem and need to find help as soon as possible. It shows that the areas housing the dental nerves have been exposed and risk suffering an infection.

The same thing applies to feeling a sharp pain when you ingest cold hot beverages and foods. You need a dentist to examine your teeth as soon as possible before the damage becomes too extensive.

Loose Teeth

Loose teeth are a common occurrence among children. They lose some of their first teeth to give way for better and stronger ones. However, this should not be the case for any adult. Your teeth should be robust and sit firmly in the gums as you grow older. Therefore, any loose teeth are a red flag and a sign that you need to see an emergency dentist as soon as possible. You could be suffering from secondary dental trauma or severe infections like periodontal disease. The buildup of bacteria (plaque) could also have found its way to the heart of your teeth, jeopardising the firm attachment between the teeth and the gums.

Knocked-Out Teeth

There is a better chance of saving and restoring a knocked-out tooth if you respond fast to the situation. Ideally, you should get help within an hour or less. The dentist will inspect the tooth and ensure that it is in the right place. They will also clean it before putting it back in place through side-by-side reinforcement. The procedure is referred to as splinting.
