Should You Use Mouthwash?

Posted on: 13 April 2021

If you brush and floss your teeth twice a day, do you need to also use mouthwash to keep your mouth fresh and healthy? Dentists recommend using mouthwash to reduce dental plaque, freshen breath and in some cases, lower the risk of gum disease. Before you add mouthwash to your dental routine, here are a few things you should know about how to use it.

Do You Need Mouthwash?

Some people manage to keep their teeth clean and healthy through a combination of brushing, flossing and regular professional cleanings carried out by their dentist. However, many people have parts of their teeth that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss. Mouthwash can deliver fluoride to these hard-to-reach places, as well as help to wash plaque away from them.

When Should You Use Mouthwash?

To get the greatest benefit from mouthwash, it is best to use it at a different time of day from when you brush and floss your teeth. Using mouthwash after your midday meal is a great way to wash traces of food away from your teeth when you might not have time to brush.

Dentists recommend that you do not use mouthwash immediately after brushing. Instead, you should brush, spit, and then continue with your day without rinsing your mouth. This routine leaves toothpaste in contact with your teeth for longer, allowing the fluoride contained in the paste to strengthen your teeth.

Which Mouthwash Should You Use?

The most effective mouthwash products contain fluoride, which helps to strengthen teeth. The concentration of fluoride is generally not as high as in toothpaste, but it can be a useful boost to a brushing routine, particularly if your teeth are prone to developing cavities.

Some mouthwashes contain special antibacterial ingredients, which help to reduce the level of harmful bacteria in your mouth. Your dentist might recommend that you use an antibacterial mouthwash if you have or at risk of developing gum disease. To combat gum disease with mouthwash, you need to use it regularly over a period of time, in addition to thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth.

Does Mouthwash Have Any Downsides?

Some people are sensitive to ingredients found in mouthwash, such as alcohol or artificial sweeteners. If your regular mouthwash gives you side effects, such as dry mouth or an upset stomach, try using a different brand that is alcohol-free. You can also ask your dentist for advice.
